Kitano Tenmangu at a glance
Kitano Tenmangu is the Kyoto shrine dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, who is worshipped here as Tenjin. It sits in the Kitano district of northwest Kyoto, on the same city bus network as Kinkaku-ji, which makes it an easy second stop on a temple day. Unlike the temples around the Golden Pavilion, the shrine grounds are open from early morning.
Regular hours are 7:00 to 17:00, with no regular closing days. The Sanko-mon gate in front of the main hall closes 30 minutes before the outer gate, so arrive by 16:30 if you want to reach the main hall. At New Year and during events the hours can differ.

The plum garden
The plum garden of Kitano Tenmangu usually opens from early February to the end of March, and because several varieties grow here, the blossoms open one after another rather than all at once. A visit in February or March gives you the best chance of seeing trees in flower.
The plum garden has its own fee, separate from the free shrine grounds. In 2026 it was run as part of an art programme from February 1 to May 24, 2026, with closing days. Tickets for that programme cost ¥2,800 for adults and ¥1,400 for children in advance, or ¥3,000 and ¥1,500 on the day, with hours from 9:00 to 20:30 and last entry at 20:00. These prices belong to the 2026 programme. For 2027, check the shrine's announcement before you plan, and remember that a garden open until May does not mean plums in bloom until May.
The shrine fits well after a morning at Kinkaku-ji. If you prefer to see the Golden Pavilion with a guide first, compare the Kinkaku-ji guided tours, then continue to Kitano Tenmangu on your own.

Autumn maples and evening illumination in 2026
The shrine opens a separate maple garden in autumn. Dates, hours and fees for the 2026 season:
| Maple garden 2026 | Dates | Hours | Fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Daytime | October 31 to December 6 | 9:00 to 16:00, last entry 15:40 | Adults from junior high ¥1,500, elementary pupils ¥700, preschoolers free |
| Evening illumination | November 13 to December 6 | Until 20:00, last entry 19:40 | – |
Tripods are not welcome in the maple garden. The illumination is a Kitano Tenmangu event only. Kinkaku-ji keeps its regular hours of 9:00 to 17:00, so an evening at the shrine does not mean an evening at the Golden Pavilion. A good autumn plan is Kinkaku-ji in the morning and the maple garden in the afternoon, or the illuminated garden after dark if you are staying nearby.
Tenjin-san market on the 25th
On the 25th of each month the shrine hosts the Tenjin-san market, a flea market held at the shrine. If your dates in Kyoto include a 25th, it is worth planning your northwest Kyoto day around it.
The market is not guaranteed. Weather, wider circumstances and the stallholders' own decisions can mean fewer stalls or a cancelled market. Check the shrine's notices close to the day, and treat the market as a bonus rather than the only reason for your trip.
If you combine the market with Kinkaku-ji, go to the temple first when it opens at 9:00 and keep the afternoon for the stalls, or the other way round if the market is your main goal. The shrine itself opens at 7:00.

Kamishichiken
Kamishichiken lies just east of Kitano Tenmangu. It is one of Kyoto's five hanamachi, the districts where geiko and maiko live and work. For the people here it is a residential and working neighbourhood, not a stage. Walk through quietly, keep to the street and do not expect to see or photograph geiko or maiko; nothing about a visit guarantees either.

From Kinkaku-ji to Kitano Tenmangu
The city bus network links Kinkakuji-michi, the stop for Kinkaku-ji, with Kitano-Hakubaicho in the Kitano area. A regular city bus ride costs a flat ¥230 for adults and ¥120 for children. Check the direction and stop before you board, as not every bus on the ring routes takes the same way.
Kitano-Hakubaicho is also a station on the Randen Kitano Line. From there it is 19 minutes of riding time to Arashiyama, with a change at Katabiranotsuji (11 minutes from Kitano-Hakubaicho), plus waiting and transfer time. A Randen ride costs ¥250 for adults and ¥120 for children aged 6 to under 12. That makes Kinkaku-ji, Kitano Tenmangu and Arashiyama a workable full day.
The Kitano area is also a practical base for both the shrine and Kinkaku-ji. Our page on where to stay near Kinkakuji compares Kitano with Nishijin and Kyoto Station.
