Where to stay near Kinkakuji: the short answer

Kinkaku-ji lies in Kyoto's Kita ward, in the northwest of the city, and the main way in is the city bus to Kinkakuji-michi. Where to stay near Kinkakuji depends on how you want to spend the rest of your trip. Kitano and Nishijin put you closest to the northwest temples. Kitaoji gives you the subway plus a short bus ride. Kyoto Station is farther from the temple but close to trains, the airport and day trips.

Many visitors stay central and join a day tour instead. Several Kinkaku-ji day tours start at Kyoto Station and include the Golden Pavilion with other sights, which makes a station hotel a practical base.

For most first-time visitors who also want to see the rest of Kyoto, Kyoto Station or Kitaoji is a practical base. If northwest Kyoto is the focus of your stay, with Ryoan-ji, Ninna-ji and Kitano Tenmangu on the list, Kitano or Nishijin shortens the way.

Kitano: near the northwest temples

The area around Kitano Tenmangu is a base for Kinkaku-ji and the shrine itself. City buses run via Kinkakuji-michi and Kitano-Hakubaicho, and from Kitano-Hakubaicho the Randen tram line runs to Arashiyama in 19 minutes of riding time, changing at Katabiranotsuji. The hanamachi of Kamishichiken lies just east of the shrine. If you want to walk the Kinukake-no-michi to Ryoan-ji and Ninna-ji early in the day, this is a short start. More on the shrine on our Kitano Tenmangu page.

Nishijin: between the centre and the temples

Nishijin sits between the western part of central Kyoto and the temples in the north. Check the bus route from your exact address before you book.

Kitaoji and Kitayama: subway plus a short bus

Around Kitaoji you sit on the Karasuma subway line and on the bus routes to the northern districts. To reach Kinkaku-ji, take bus 204 or 205 from Kitaoji to Kinkakuji-michi. This subway and bus combination is the alternative to the long direct bus from Kyoto Station. From Kitaoji, buses also run to Kamigamo Shrine (bus 37 or Kita 3), and the seasonal bus 109 in November 2026 starts here too.

Kyoto Station: trains and the airport

Kyoto Station is a practical base if you arrive from the airport or plan day trips. The JR HARUKA runs direct from Kansai Airport (KIX) in about 80 to 100 minutes, airport buses run from KIX to the Hachijo exit, and limousine buses from Osaka Itami (ITM) take about 50 to 55 minutes to the station. From the station, city bus 205 reaches Kinkakuji-michi in about 40 minutes, plus about 10 minutes on foot; traffic can add more. A taxi from the Hachijo exit to Kinkaku-ji costs about ¥3,350 per car as of 2026, depending on traffic. Many day tours that include Kinkaku-ji also meet near the station.

Kyoto accommodation tax from March 2026

Since 1 March 2026, Kyoto charges its accommodation tax per person and per night, in five bands based on the room rate per person.

Room rate per person per nightTax per person per night
Under ¥6,000¥200
¥6,000 to under ¥20,000¥400
¥20,000 to under ¥50,000¥1,000
¥50,000 to under ¥100,000¥4,000
¥100,000 and more¥10,000

The tax is based on the accommodation charge including any service charge that belongs to it; meals and consumption tax are not counted. It applies per person, not per room, so a family of four pays it four times. A room rate between ¥6,000 and ¥20,000 per person falls in the ¥400 band.

Practical tips for your stay

  • Leave large bags at your accommodation before the visit.
  • City buses charge a flat ¥230 for adults and ¥120 for children as of 2026, and IC cards such as ICOCA and Suica work on board. Board at the back, pay at the front when you get off.
  • If you arrive late from KIX and stay in the northwest, a fixed-fare taxi is an option: around ¥28,000 per car one way for the northwest zone as of 2026, tolls extra. Confirm the zone for your exact address when booking.
  • The temple opens at 09:00. Staying in Kitano or Kitaoji makes it easy to be there at opening without an early start across the city.

Route details for every option are on our getting there page.
